The CV Story

Comeback Vinyl is an online record shop with a brick & mortar store location in Alpharetta, GA.

When we started the business in 2014, we wanted to create a retail company that we would enjoy shopping with.

Neither of us had any formal education or personal experience running an eCommerce site or a physical retail store. We created Comeback Vinyl because we get excited about music and records and we thought we’d have a great time sharing that feeling with other record collectors like us. When figuring out ways of doing things, we always thought of stuff from our customers’ perspective first and we still do.

Our team specializes in offering the same things you would expect from a large company but with the personal touches that you can only get from a small business. Free shipping $75+, super-secure packaging, free and easy returns, over 20,000 new vinyl titles in stock, and so much more. But at the root of what we do, we’re a small group of music lovers that obsess over both music and customer service.

We cherish opportunities to get to know our customers and we take pride in building down to earth relationships with folks that shop with us both online and in-store. Everyone on The CV Crew loves what we do and we’re here every day ready to help you build your record collection.

I think I want a turntable.
Alex started collecting records in college which prompted his mom, Karen, to see if her brother still had her record collection that’d been at his house for the past few decades. He did but it’d gone through a major flood. We spent a summer going through hundreds of records from Karen’s youth and cleaning, cataloging, and organizing all of them. Peeling jackets apart that had melded together, scrubbing mold off of discs, hearing that snap crackle pop that only flood waters can bury in a groove – it was kinda fun. We started finding folks that were interested in selling their own record collections and we began buying albums in bulk throughout the Atlanta area. It was a way for us to bond over music and to add to our own record collections but it was also a blast.

A booth at an antique mall
We had started to end up with a lot of records that we either already had or just weren’t for us. As a way to fund our hobby, we opened a booth at the Green Bean Exchange antique mall on Hwy 9 in Alpharetta, GA where we live. It started with a really small booth and just two crates of records but it quickly filled up and we ended up moving to a larger booth 3 times over 13 months of being there. We started working as sales clerks in the antique store a few days a week. It allowed us to connect with the folks that had been coming in and shopping for records at our booth and we learned more about what our customers liked and were looking for. We stocked a mixture of new and used vinyl in the booth and rarer used titles online. As Alex was about to graduate from college and started looking for a job the idea of opening a record store came about. The booth had been doing well and we had learned a lot about the vinyl business. Karen had worked as a sales clerk at a Camelot Music in Mississippi during high school and college. We decided that if there was ever a good time to live out the dream of owning a record store, this was it.

We’re opening a record store.
We opened a stand-alone brick & mortar location at 520 South Main Street in Alpharetta, GA. It was about a mile down the road from the antique mall booth (which we actually kept open but on a smaller scale). Being in the Atlanta Metro we were able to connect with customers from all over ATL. We made connections and friendships with tons of vinyl collectors. The store was only about 750 square feet but we made pretty great use of the small space and had a lot of records in there. Connor, who’s now our warehouse manager, was one of our regular customers at the time and he offered to help out at the shop part time. It was just the three of us at that original location and it was growing super-fast. We were getting to the point that on weekends and holidays there were so many people at the store you could hardly walk around. Not only that, but our online business was growing and it was a challenge to keep up with the number of shipments we were shipping out on top of in-store shoppers. We knew we needed a bigger location and a bigger team to keep up with it all.

The new home of CV Brick + Mortar
In our new home we started out by significantly expanding our inventory offerings and we were reaching a much larger audience of vinyl collectors. With more customers and more inventory comes more work – we started hiring folks to help out at the shop part time and eventually began transitioning people to full time roles. Today, our brick and mortar team strive to offer an unparalleled level of service and professionalism that you don’t find at most record shops. We take a personal yet down to earth approach to customer service and always put customers first. The brick and mortar location offers all of the 20,000+ new vinyl titles found in the online store, plus several thousand used records that aren’t listed on the site. The shop’s open every day from 11am – 7pm at 1 S. Main St. in downtown Alpharetta, GA.
